Coming! 11.14.14. Logan Theatre “Chris Drew– Chicago made Film is “David vs Goliath”

Coming! 11.14.14. Logan Theatre- Chicago Indie film quote Bruce Scivally, Documentary Filmmaker & Author REVIEW:
“Free Speech & the Transcendent Journey of Chris Drew, Street Artist” is not your typical narrative documentary, but rather a mesmerizing, experiential—and experimental—film more akin to an art film,
which is appropriate considering that its subject is an artist.
Chris Drew set out to challenge Chicago’s street vending laws,
but ended up being a champion of free speech
when he was charged with felony eavesdropping for recording his arrest.
His fight to then overturn the eavesdropping law
became a true David-versus-Goliath tale,
with the efforts of the maverick Drew captured by maverick filmmaker Nancy Bechtol.
The result is an engrossing and timely film.”

Shellie Lewis’s Blog posting remembers Chris Drew and asks “I wonder what the etiquette is for Facebook when your friend dies. “

CMYK Chris Drew Portrait by Shellie Lewis, CMYK Process acrylic inks, spray paint, permanent marker, glitter, sequins and Unryu paper on canvas, 24” x 36” [Art Patch Project related]

Chris Drew loved Process inks and silkscreen.  He loved that he could take his photography skills and combine them with a varied, painterly hand-made physical media.  I want to believe that he would have liked the multi-media memorial portrait I made of him.  If I’m objective, I have probably made it it much too happy, too cartoony and portrayed him as rather chubby in a knee jerk response to seeing him slowly waste away and die from cancer.  People die from all sorts of wide spread diseases but cancer has the strongest hold on our popular sympathy for having the most intense visual impact, the worst before-and-after pictures.

I grouped the painting with the political section of my blog since Chris died while still under indictment for the arrest as an activist seeking reformation of Chicago’s peddler’s laws and had been subsequently charged with a major felony regarding the Illinois eavesdropping statute for audio recording his own arrest.  The last judge to deal with the eavesdropping case ruled the arrest was not Constitutional and kicked it up to a higher court.  Chris was optimistic about seeing the case resolved, the eavesdropping law overturned and his name cleared.

I wonder what the etiquette is for Facebook when your friend dies.  I guess you can’t just remove a dead friend from your list of friends; that seems amoral -the digital equivalent of flushing a dead pet goldfish down the toilet and calling it a funeral.  There certainly are not going to be any future status updates.  Meanwhile, to preserve Chris Drew’s art, I am just going to post them here.  He liked t-shirts because he loved combining both the functional and the accessible in his art.  He was a street artist that embraced being out on the streets.

Chicago Premiere 11.14.14 Press Release

PRESS RELEASE: Announcing the Chicago Premiere of
“Free Speech & the Transcendent Journey of Chris Drew, Street Artist” (99 min) 2014, by Nancy Bechtol. an indie feature documentary film made in Chicago.

● EVENT LOCATION: Logan Theatre 2646 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago
● November 14, 2014 Friday 6:30 doors open – 7:30 film starts

Nancy Bechtol, an award winning photographer and artist has been documenting social justice and Chicago street artists for 30 years. This film is a departure from anything she has ever done and evolved over 5 years, shot on 5 different formats, including DSLR to cell phones.
Featured throughout is the indie music, courtesy of Hey Now Records, of by Behind the Sun, Andy Alton & David Mansfield.

Chris Drew, who passed away 2012, was the long-time Executive Director of The Uptown Multi-Cultural Arts Center (UM-CAC) located in the American Indian Center.
In 2009, Chris asked Nancy (with 2 friends) to accompany him and document his attempt to get arrested for peddling art patches with messages of social awareness and artistic ideas to challenge Chicago’s Peddler’s Ordinance.

Chris was arrested for selling art patches for $1, (peddling) but since he had a personal tape recorder, charges changed to a felony violation of Illinois’ Eavesdropping Law by Illinois State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, which carried 4-15 years in jail if convicted. In 2009 this law was generally unknown. Two pro bono Attorneys defended him. First, Mark Weinberg challenged on the free speech constitutional ground; then Joshua Kutnick, criminal defense, defended, and won in the courtroom of Judge Sachs, on the felony charges in 2012.

Everything changed. From his arrest, for making an audio recording of his own arrest, to his untimely death from lung cancer, the film tracks Chris’ activism around Free Speech, his connections to the community, his connection to street artists in Chicago and internationally, and his transcendent belief in Free Speech. From interviews with his lawyers and with all kinds of people who worked with Chris from the American Indian Center and elsewhere, and knew him, including lawmaker Rep. Elaine Nekritz who got involved in the struggle to overturn the draconian Illinois Eavesdropping Law film is a colorful trip through Chicago’s Occupy and Anti-War protests, Critical Mass bike rides, and more, as you learn about a real American patriot who believed that art, thought, and free speech were worth fighting for.
Note: The Illinois Supreme Court overturned the Ill Eavesdropping Law, March 2014.
